Introduction of Myself
My name is Darren Yan. After one year in River Valley, I found out that although there was a lot of school work, if I plan my time well I can cope with the work and still play. I enjoy playing soccer during my free time, I will usually go down and play soccer after I have done my work. Although I like soccer sometimes, I will play games on my tablet. I play games like hearthstone , vainglory and so on. I find this games fun as they require to a certain extant something thinking. I am new to this games so I am not that good at it. My favorite subject is science as it can be easily done with good reasoning, thinking and a bit of memorizing. I find cid quite challenging as I it needs me to think more.Poverty
Does being rich make you happy? To some extend it does, you can use it to buys things you want such as high quality food, all the smartphones. However there is a story: A rich man came to a small island, he saw a fisherman sitting on the beach relaxing. The rich man walked over and asked, "Why are you lazing here when you can be fishing?" The fisherman replied" I have had already fished enough for my family to eat." The rich man said," You should fish more so you can earn extra money, then, you can buy a bigger boat, then you can earn more money. After earning more money you can buy a fleet of boat and hire people and help you fish, then you can earn more money." "What do you do after that?" The fisherman asked calmly. "You can enjoy life." The business said. The fisherman laughed and said, " isn't that what I'm doing now !"This stories show that being rich can make you happy but being poor also can make you happy too. However, to be rich, you have to earn a lot of money, to earn a lot of money you must work extra hard, to work extra hard you will have lesser time to enjoy life. Without time to do things you want how can you be happy. Most studies shows that people who are happy are usually those who live in rural areas, they do not need to get a computer to play games, they do not bother to use a phone to communicate with their friends. Most importantly, they do not expect themselves to earn a lot of money as they only bother about their needs. Therefore, I think that people should not think that being rich is happy so they try to earn lots of money
CHINGAY REFLECTION
This year, I went to the Chingay parades with my class. It was a very enriching journey which taught me many things which will be said later. Firstly I feel that it has help my class bond better as of us are sharing tidbits and foods to each other so we will not be very hungry during the show, even our form teacher also brought tidbits and shared it with us. At the end of the show, our class took a partial class photo as people like me ran away(very late), my classmates also took many wefies(again I was not inside). this help promotes bonding between my classmates. And my class also picked up rubbish from the floor, inspired by the english comprehension we did about picking up rubbish and loving Singapore.
The theme of Chingay this year is "LIGHTS OF LEGACY, BRIGHTER SINGAPORE" The theme of Chingay this year is to commemorate and thank all the pioneer generations that contributed to Singapore, and this theme also hopes that the next generations of Singaporeans can work together as one to work towards SG hundred. I personally think that this is very important for us, the next generations. The generations of Singaporeans before that built Singapore had no natural resource and had many setbacks but overcame them all(not history lesson though). Now all the Singaporeans enjoy a very good life having smart phones and sort, we do not have the challenges which inspires and motivate us to work towards a brighter future, some of us think that Singapore is always going to remain the best and we Singaporeans will defintely get a good job. But NO! That's not the case, with all the policy which the government set up, some young Singaporeans cannot even find a job even though they graduate from university and are blaming it all on the government. I think that this Chingay is to tell us we must work hard for Singapore to reach the next 50 year, and hopefully not be like the useless Singaporeans who doesn't want to work hard for whatever they want and want the government to help them all the time.
Chingay's first parade was in 4 February 1973, it was started as Singapore has just banned the usage of fireworks, thus trying to use Chingay as a way to compensate for the lack of firecrackers to scare away the evil spirits. the Chingay parade was so well recieved that it was made an annual event. I think we are very lucky that chingay was very well recieved due to the fact that Chingay itself showed me the importance of many values such as the importance of racial harmony, the importance of working hard towards a bright future and so on.
Finally about the performance. I think that it is nice. the best performance in my view is the dragon spitting fire.(It didn't actually spit fire, just that the movement with the fiery pearl in front was so synchronised that it looks like the dragon was spitting fire) It is soooooooo much more interesting than the giant floats as the giant float look so lame(especially the POSB one), the dragon was actually made up of wood and it still can spit fire. All the lights on the floats are LED and hurts my eye when I look at them, but the dragons they look so cool. this shows me that to make a complete and good performance you have to work together as one so that your performance will be good. The floats might be boring but they are actually very significant in the show as it is call " 'Lights' of legacy..." that's why all the values and things are displayed on it. Actually , i would consider myself very lucky as it was not raining then and I manage to watch the whole performance without any need to use umbrella or raincoat as compared to the Chingay which happened on Friday evening (February 19) which even the guest of honour Mr Lee Hsien Loong had to wear a raincoat.
In conclusion, I would want to go Chingay again and experience the different 'bright' and colourful performances. I am also looking forward to the next planned activity which RV organised- the OELP.
POSB things with 'building stronger community'
Gets boring after seeing like 10+++++ OF THIS
Below: The GIANT FLOAT with lights of legacy supposed to be main item. Although i find the Singapore POOLS thing more interesting( the 13mill TOTO)
3 things I found out:
1. Sinagpore wanted people to have less babies last time but are now giving people bonuses to encourage them to have more babies.
2: Singapore started the 2 child policy in 1972.
3. China 1 child policy increased the numbers of boys in China
2 perceptions I have:
1.Singapore implemented the 1 child policy due to the lack of space
2.The policy help alot in the short term but very little in the long term
1 question i have:
1. Why did the government allow the policy, wouldn't they think deeply first?
PRE-TRIP REFLECTION
I feel excited for the Xiamen trip and there are many questions floating in my head right now. Firstly, it is about the place I researched about, the "WeiZhengGe,WenChangMen", I had a hard time researching about it and even so I still could not find much information about it. My question is that 'Why is the place just named"WenChangMen", it is basically a name of that sort of doors." The second question is 'Is Xiamen a city full of unique culture.
