Introduction of Myself

Helloooooooo,I am Qin Yi,a quite cheerful girl.My CCA is Concert Band, and my section is Percussion. That sounds cool, doesn't it? I have been joining Percussion since Primary four. Before joining Percussion, I had joined Netball, Taekwondo and choir. Unfortunately, none of them got my interested. Since the every first moment that I joined Percussion, I am in loved with it. I loved the feeling of been surrounded by music, and producing great music that is enjoyable by most.
My Primary school is very simple and a small school. It is different from River Valley, which is one of the top school. However, I still love my primary school a lot. I would still visit my school once a while to help my juniors, despite the fact that it is all the way at Khatib. Many people had asked me, what made you chose River Valley High? I had to say that, before coming to this school, I knew nothing about this school, but I just wanted to come. Neither because of the good result, nor the big school compound. Surprisingly, it with my first encounter with River Valley, when I came to take part in a competition. When I am Primary Four, I joined a competition in River Valley, which is called Story Challenge. I am just simple been attracted to this school, and determined to go to River Valley High. For three years, I hold on to my choice of school. I did not hesitate a bit, when filling in my choice of the school.
I had to say that, coming to River Valley High is really a challenge for me. A totally new environment for me. However, I actually kind of in love with this feeling. I think that sometimes, we should not be to use to an environment. Changes are good somehow. It made you grow, learn and break the limit that you thought that is impossible.
  That is me !

Poverty

Personally, I felt that happiness, has nothing that is related to poverty. Take Singapore and Indonesia as example. I had once read that Singapore is growing much more than Indonesia in terms of economics, but Indonesia' s happiness index, is so much high than Singapore' s. That is a bit strange, isn't it? People always suppose that with wealth, you can do and buy whatever you want, and that will make you happy. However, is it that always true? Indonesia might not be as not as developed as Singapore, but why is there happiness index higher? Take one simple example: a young boy wants a toy car in a department store. If the parent refuse to buy the car for the boy. Will he boy stay with the car or go off with the parents? The car means the money, and the parent means the happiness. I do not disagree that the money cannot give us the happiness. However, it will definitely not last as long as what family, friends give you. Everybody understands this, but how many of us can follow this through out our whole life? I heard a sentence that is quite provoking before: a girl said that she would rather cry in a sports car, than laughing on a bicycle.  Many people take money as a more and more precious thing. A lot of people would want to be richer, and they, of course, ignored the happiness.

Reflection (Economy - Aging Population)

3 things that I found out :
- Singapore once faced the problem of overwhelming population situation as well.
- Education is affected as well when there the population is big.
- Singapore had tried so many program, to encourage people to only have two child.
2 new perception :
- From the teacher's point of view, having too many child in class, will lead to inefficient teaching, and the teachers would really have a hard time.
- From the parent's point of view, having only there is only one child, when they are older, that one child might not be able to take care both of them.
1 question :
- When the parents have a child, that means a life, does that mean they must kill the life, just because a policy?

Chingay

This year Chingay's theme is "Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore". Indeed, this year is Singapore's 51 years old. It means the the first step that is stepping towards 100 years. This year Chingay has the purpose of setting a head start for the Singapore next 100 year, or even more. We have been thinking what our future will be like, but now, we should be thinking what will the future of Singapore be like in the following years. All of us have different ideas on what Singapore will be like. This year, Chingay let us write our expectation on "Light bulbs" or box, lighting all of them up. This shows that Singapore has a really bright future.
At first, Chingay is celebrated to compensate for the ban of firecrackers, as Lunar Chinese Year, by tradition, should be having firecracker to drive away all the evil spirit. This is mooted by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Thus, Chingay is celebrated, when Chinese New Year is just around the corner, started off with just street events. Nowadays, Chingay is not only celebrated for Chinese New Year, but also a celebration where Singaporean comes together and celebrate together. Chingay has became more and more fancy, in terms of their cloth and props. As more and more people gets involved in Chingay, the Chingay now is celebrated nation wide. Chingay is also overcast to a lot of channels, including overseas ones. I truly felt the spirit of Singapore, where everybody come together and celebrate as one. I think there is a change because Singapore has became more and more harmony. Racial-harmony seems like a symbol of Singapore. Thus, Chingay is a really good platform to show how every race is united together to put up this wonderful performance. Through this performance, we can also understand a bit of other race's culture.
I think organizers fulfilled the purpose, because in order to have another 50 years or more, the most important thing is to let everybody get together and worked together towards the same goal. That night, I can really see everybody coming together, clapping together, enjoying each and every moment. The organizer prepared box to draw our visions. When we are drawing it, we really think hard about what kind of future are we expecting or wanting. This motivate us to do a even better job job in the future, to work towards the goal.

Pre-trip Reflection

This is not the same time that I go to China, but the places I went before are more of the Northern side. I went to Xiamen a lot of times as a plane transit stop. I did not actually get out of the plane and really look at this city, where I have come so many times. Xiamen definitely does not sound as big as Beijing, Shanghai, to me, the first impression of it is a city, where life seems more peaceful and slow-paced than other urban cities. If we have to do a comparison between Singapore and Xiamen, I assumed that Singapore will be like a extremely fast-paced city, that people would rarely have time to stop, and wonder about what they are actually working so hard for, and what is their goal? I think Xiamen really caught my attention, I would love to see it for myself if the assumptions I made for Xiamen is generally correct. I hope that I can observe the type of lifestyle a common Xiamen people will have, and what is the strength of Xiamen. Talking about the strength of the Xiamen, I start to wonder, will Xiamen be a place full of factories, and has tons of air pollution? Or will it be a peaceful city without all the very advanced technology. I hope I can get to know more about their cultures too. Xiamen is quite a fast developing city, I believe it faces some culture lost as well. How Xiamen is balancing with culture lost and development of the city? What are the opinions of the residents about destroying old and significant buildings, to give ways to skyscrapers?   As a whole class, I hope everyone will have a new understanding of China people, not stereotyping them as Chinese talking loudly in the public transport.

Person Reflection of the Trip

To me, Xiamen is a country that is trying to develop fast, but there are still areas of improvement. One area that they are lacked of, even Singapore is lacking a it at this, it is rubbish disposal. Generally, when we go to tourist attractions, the places seems quite clean. However, when we went into the small streets, we discovered how dirty it is, and the incorrect ways of disposing rubbish. Comparing it with Singapore, Singapore is known for most clean city, but there are people who said that it is actually the most cleaned city. In fact, a lot of us do not dispose the rubbish at correct place, due to their laziness or their unwillingness, and the cleaners have to clean for us. A scene that I witnessed in school can proved that: there are two rubbish bins in the canteen, the one near to the walkway is so full that, rubbish starts to come out, however, the one next to it which is a bit further from the walkway is almost empty. Why is that so? Is it because the students are just so lazy to take that one step, to throw it somewhere else? Or is it just a habit for them to throw in one rubbish bin even though there is another one? The rubbish that is overflowed is cleaned by cleaners, not the students that should be responsible for it. Is there lack of responsibility? I am very sure there is. People think that even the rubbish created by themselves are dirty. They did not spend a thought for cleaners who are cleaning for all their rubbish. Exchanging perspective of people's life should be practice as habit before doing anything and everything too.
