Introduction of Myself

I am Jinhan from 2I,and currently studying in River Valley High School. What makes me wanted to be part of River Valley High School is mainly because the big school compound and it is a school with integrated programme which allows students to study for 6 years and take A levels without the need to take O level. The school compound is also considered to be one of the biggest in Singapore. It also has top students which allows me to learn from their good characters and know about knowledges that I do not know before.I worked really hard for my PSLE,trying my best to get into this 'dream' school of mine and I really did it!
My CCA in River Valley High School is National Police Cadet Corp(NPCC) and my rank in NPCC is private. As my CCA will train me physically and mentally,it causes my whole body to ache a lot especially on the second day.Despite these difficulties,I know that physical and mental training is essential because I will have to go for National Service sooner or later.Although my CCA lessons are  boring and dull sometimes,I still do enjoy my CCA and I make more new friends and I am more stronger both physically and mentally.
My primary school is Yuhua Primary School.Although I am in River Valley High School now,I still do miss my primary school 's times, friends and teachers.I also visit my primary school occasionally as my primary school is the school that groom and nurture me to become mature and allowing me to be able to get into River Valley High School for secondary school education.
My CCA in primary school from Primary 4 to Primary 6 is badminton.I felt regretful of not putting what my primary school coaches taught me fully into use during the badminton trial in River Valley High School.Playing badminton will allow me release my stress in my real life and badminton is also my hobby.I enjoyed playing badminton a lot especially with my family members and friends, and doing this will allow us to bond together and have a better relationship.I also like playing badminton during my free time so that my skills will be better and practice makes perfect.I practice more often in order to perfect my skills whenever my school sent me for tournament matches played with other schools.
My goals for Year 2 in River Valley High School is to be able to achieve good academic results with all subjects with a grade of A so that I will not disappoint my parents since my parents have high expectations of me.In this new year,I also hope to have a better relationship with my family members and not be too stubborn sometimes over trivial matters.

Poverty

Although Singapore is a prosperous country,we are not a happy country.Over the  years, there are several surveys conducted demonstrating that Singapore is not one of the happiest societies on the planet.Surveys also show that Singapore has clearly been more successful than other countries such as Indonesia in terms of economic development. However,Many of the ASEAN countries are far more happier than Singapore.Singapore is not a happy country. It is reported that Singaporeans are the least likely to have any positive emotions despite having one of the highest GDP per capita in the world.I think that Singapore is not a happy country because there are animal studies which shows that animals will be less happy when they are house in close proximity with little space to roam in.This might be the same for Singaporeans as Singapore is lack of space for people and Singaporeans might get unhappy about it.One way of handling this problem is to laugh more as Singaporeans rarely laugh at themselves. We can laugh more by letting some of the leading citizens to be lampooned once in a while.Being rich doesn't mean being happy.Being rich just means that you have a lot of money and you have a good family condition but being happy means that you are glad over something that happened. When you have a lot of money, you might not be happy over something as happiness cannot be bought by using money.

Chingay

Chingay is the largest street performance and float parade in Asia. Chingay is equivalent to the Mandarin "zhuang yi"(妆艺) which means "the art of costume and masquerade" in the Hokkien dialect.

I think that the purpose of Chingay is to create noise and gaiety in compensation of the ban on firecrackers in 1972 due to fire hazards caused. As firecrackers is a customary New Year Practice to drive away evil spirits, the ban was viewed unfavorably by people. Thus,Chingay is formed in order to create noise and gaiety to compensate the ban on firecrackers.Another purpose of Chingay is to bring people of different races, speaking different languages and came from different parts of the world and hometowns together as one. There will then be racial harmony as different people with different backgrounds started to make friends when they are together in Chingay. The purpose of Chingay 2016 is also to remember our founding prime minister,Mr Lee Kuan Yew for his policies and his contributions towards the development of Singapore into a successful country now.

This has changed since the first Chingay parade. In the past,There are much lesser people participating in Chingay and most of the people participating then are all the Chinese. Now,Chingay has more than ten thousands of performers performing and now,not just the Chinese participated in Chingay but other races such as Indians and Malays also joined in to participate in Chingay. The costumes now are also more colourful and vibrant compared to those in the past. There is also live telecast on the television nowadays when Chingay is held, but in the past, they will have to go to the venues where Chingay is held if they wanted to watch the parade.
I also think that the organizers have successfully fulfilled these purposes. There were a lot of noises made during the Chingay parade so this fulfilled the purpose of making noises to compensate for the ban of firecrackers and to drive away evil spirits. The emcees also made the mood of the audiences to the peak. There are also a lot of volunteers volunteering to participate in Chingay, all from different races and backgrounds. This creates a multi-racial and racial harmony society in Singapore.Core values, which Mr Lee Kuan Yew insisted and implemented such as social cohesion, prudency and the Can-Do Singapore spirits are also demonstrated in this parade. Therefore,I think that the organizers have successfully fulfilled their purposes of organizing Chingay parade.

Reflection (Economy - Aging Population)

3 things I found out:
1.I found out the year which the one and two child policy is
implemented in China and Singapore respectively.
2.When there is only one child allowed to be born in China, more girls
get to have education as they are the only child.
3.If there are lesser babies born, there will be a better
teacher-student ratio and student will be able to learn faster.
2 perceptions I have gained:
1.When the child policies are implemented, there will be lesser
children to support the old aging population as the number of babies
born is reduced while the aging population increases.
2.Economics will grow slower as there is lesser babies born.
1 question I may have:
1.How will the one and two child policy in China and Singapore affect
families which wants to have more children?

Pre-Trip Reflection
During the OELP Trip to Xiamen,I hope that I will be able to learn about the differences of the cost of living, heritages and education between China and Singapore. This is because,I will want to have a better understanding and knowledge about how is the whole China system working.I will also want to know how the differences in the system in China and Singapore benefits their own citizens and people living in their country. One of the things that I hope to learn is the differences in education system between China and Singapore. After doing some research,I learnt that the students in China are more hardworking than Singapore students. In China,it is very competitive among the students as they think that if you do not study hard, you will hardly get a good job in the future. However,in Singapore, students are not so hardworking as most Singaporeans will get paid at least $2,000 which is equivalent to around $10,000 when they entered the working industry. Thus, they might not think of getting better results as they do not worry for their future.Despite these researches found out,I still hope to know and see the difference myself. As what I observed in Singapore, many people are taking things for granted. For example, people are just requesting for what they want to their parents and their parents will try their best to complete it.From this,I also hope to find out from my buddy that whether this situation happen in Xiamen. This is also a good and rare opportunity for our class to bond together as we are going Xiamen as a class, doing activities as a class and we will know each other better.Lastly,I will end off with some questions that I have. They are "Are there any strengths of Xiamen that is the weakness of Singapore and it will allow Singapore 's system will be able to improved?" and "How is the standard of living different in Xiamen and Singapore?"
